ELVIS MEETS VAN GOGH: Graceland will host an “immersive” exhibition

Members of the media previewed the 20,000-square-foot exhibit on Thursday, a day before the experience opened to the public, and walked around in the light of 4 trillion pixels of content reflecting everything and everyone in the room.

Contemporary musical scores by Miles Davis, Pat Metheny and Max Richter played softly into the immersive experience with rumbling and thundering sound effects.

“Expect the unexpected,” said Angie Marchese, vice president of archives and exhibits at Graceland.

“Even if you’re just a casual observer of the art, being in the environment is a whole different way to see it. You’re literally immersed in its work.”

She said the experience of looking at a two-dimensional painting in a museum doesn’t compare to the light show of paintings at “Beyond Van Gogh.”

Paquin Entertainment Group pitched the idea months ago to Elvis Presley Enterprises, though Graceland officials had been watching the exhibit for some time.

“The funny thing is, we were so excited about this exhibit even before they contacted us,” Marchese said. “We had been talking about this for about a year, how cool the van Gogh exhibit is because it started picking up in different cities, and we were like, ‘How cool would it be here? Then it happened.”

Montreal-based Normal Studio developed the 3D exhibition of van Gogh’s paintings that ebb and flow into each other with brushstrokes, splatters and sketches stretching across the room.

The exhibit has appeared in cities around the world, including St. Louis, Baltimore, Brazil and Peru. It has sold over 2.5 million tickets worldwide.

The latest attraction is expected to draw nearly 30,000 people to the Elvis Presley Resort, Marchese said.
